Community Engagement Requirements

Overview  

SJV PRIME+ students will be introduced to the Community Engagement requirements of the SJV PRIME+ program through the Introduction to Medical Learning, year 2 course (MED 020 & 021). Throughout the academic year, this course will provide opportunities to understand the importance of engaging community members within the healthcare system as well as provide the opportunity to learn about clinical practice through observation of healthcare providers.   

This will be accomplished through a combination of:  

  • Classroom Seminars 
  • Experiential Learning 
  • Service Learning 
  • Community Engaged Research Symposium  

Students will be expected to dedicate time outside the classroom each week to experiential and service learning. The SJV PRIME+ community engagement team will work with students to find placements and opportunities for both service learning and experiential learning. 

Community Engagement Requirements  

SJV PRIME+ Students are Required to:  

  • Receive a passing grade in Introduction to Medical Learning Year 2 courses:  
    • MED 020 IML: Introduction to Community Engagement (Fall) 
    • MED 021 IML: Assessing Community Needs (Spring) 
  • Complete 200 hours of combined Service and Experiential Learning 
    • Hours completed include a culmination of the following items:  
      • Experiential Learning 
      • Service Learning 
      • Community Engaged Research Project 

Students are expected to follow the SJV PRIME+ Professionalism Policy at all times while completing community engagement requirements. As necessary, the Community Engagement Team will follow the Student Professionalism Lapses & Violations Policy. 

Learning Objectives & Expectations 

IML 2 Seminars (MED 020 & 021):  

SJV PRIME+ students will attend IML 2 seminars to learn about community engagement as it relates to health care. Students will also have opportunities to participate in peer discussions to share their experiences.  Seminars will include a combination of content presentations, learning debriefings, and peer sharing on community engagement experiences.

Experiential Learning:  

SJV PRIME+ students will engage in experiential learning opportunities through observation of health care providers in their day-to-day activities. These experiences will provide opportunities to understand the roles and responsibilities of each member of the health care team and how they work collectively to provide care in the San Joaquin Valley. SJV PRIME+ students will engage in opportunities intentionally curated by the Community Engagement team to provide exposure to these types of experiences within a primary healthcare setting.  

SJV PRIME+ students will be expected to complete four semesters of experiential learning  across years 2-3 of the program. Students should expect to spend one half-day each week on experiential learning throughout the semester. The SJV PRIME+ community engagement team will work with students to find placements and complete clinical onboarding requirements.

Experiential Learning Expectations:  

Most experiential learning will take place between Years 2-3 with options to complete this requirement during summer sessions as needed. The SJV PRIME+ Staff Advisors will work with students to develop a plan for completing experiential learning requirements. Once students have identified when they plan to complete experiential learning, the community engagement team will work directly with the SJV PRIME+ students to assign clinical placements.  

 

Service Learning:  

SJV PRIME+ students will be expected to engage in service-learning with local community partners.  Service-learning serves to foster civic engagement, enhance understanding of social determinants of health, and help students practice pre-professional skills. Students should expect to engage in opportunities with local community-based organizations, community health workers, and other essential community partners to gain an understanding of SJV populations, communities, health needs, and responsive community engagement.

Service-Learning Expectations:

 SJV PRIME+ students will be asked to complete 60 hours of combined Service Learning with partnering organization(s) throughout the IML Year 2 course. Please note that a detailed Service-Learning plan will be shared with each cohort as part of the IML 2 course. The Community Engagement Team will work directly with students to outline a structured plan for completing service learning within year 2.  

 

Community Engagement Research Project & Symposium:  

SJV PRIME+ Students will apply the concepts learned in IML 2 classroom seminars through developing a Community Engaged Research Project. Students will work with the IML 2 course instructor to develop their research project as part of the IML 2 coursework. These projects will be presented by SJV PRIME+ Students as part of the National Public Health Week Research Symposium at the end of year 2.
