The Introduction to Medical Learning (IML) Year 3, is a 2-semester course series:
- 1st Semester of IML Year 3:
In the first semester of IML Year 3, SJV PRIME+ students will learn the basics of being involved in research and research methods to effectively contribute to a research lab. This course has special emphasis on developing students' inquiry skills for health-based careers such as diagnostic-based questioning.
Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes:
- Students will use the scientific method to develop hypothesis-driven questions by designing an impactful research experiment or study.
- Students will learn how to effectively search the literature to build foundational knowledge to develop high-impact research questions.
- Students will learn about team science and practice how they can be an effective contributor to a research team.
- 2nd Semester of IML Year 3:
In the second semester of IML Year 3, SJV PRIME+ students will learn the basics of research to effectively contribute to a research lab. This course has special emphasis on developing students' inquiry skills for health-based careers such as diagnostic-based questioning.
Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes (Spring 2026):
- Students will learn the basics of research ethics based on NIH requirements for trainees.
- Students will learn about why communicating research is important in medicine and public health.
- Students will demonstrate research presentation skills and provide constructive feedback to peers
Please note, students will need to complete the Baccalaureate Research Experience (BRE) and this 2-semester IML Year 3 course to fulfill the SJV PRIME+ pathway's research requirement.
