Required Meetings

Each semester, students are required to meet with their SJV PRIME+ Staff Advisor to discuss program requirements and opportunities for support (see Procedural Expectations for all required meetings with Advisors and related deadlines).

First year students are required to attend at least one meeting per semester with the Bobcat Advising Center (BAC). Second year students and above are required to attend at least one meeting per semester with their assigned Major Academic Advisor. During these meetings, students will discuss course registration, graduation planning, and completion of Med Ed Core courses

Additionally, all students are encouraged to meet with their SJV PRIME+ Staff Advisor to discuss any personal or academic challenges. They can refer students to appropriate resources aimed at supporting their personal and academic success.

Additional Meetings: Case-by-Case

If students would like to meet with the SJV PRIME+ Staff Advisor or Academic Advisors beyond the required meetings, they are encouraged to schedule additional meetings. SJV PRIME+ Staff Advisors and Academic Advisors may also request additional meetings with students if needed on a case-by-case basis.

Required Activities

As part of the SJV PRIME+ Observing and Maintaining Professionalism Program Requirement, attendance and participation at SJV PRIME+ events and associated activities are required for students, unless specific events are otherwise noted as optional. Required SJV PRIME+ events include:

  • IML Courses (MED 010-1, 020-1, 110-1, 120-1)
  • SJV PRIME+ Physician Mentoring Program
  • SJV PRIME+ Program Engagement Events (e.g. UCSF Fresno Visit, New Student Orientation, Engagement with SJV PRIME Med Students)
  • Community Engagement (includes both experiential and service learning)
  • Baccalaureate Research Experience and research symposium

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required at all sessions and events. We recognize that, in certain situations, students may need to be absent. The policy below outlines expectations for when students must miss a class or required SJV PRIME+ activity.

1. Anticipated Absences

  • Students must submit an online absence request form at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled session
  • Failure to receive prior approval for an absence will result in the absence being marked as unexcused
  • Visits for medical, psychological, or counseling services (e.g., CAPS) are considered anticipated absences and must follow the same advance notice procedure

2. Unanticipated Absences

  • Unanticipated absences include illness or personal/family emergencies
  • In such cases, students are required to notify the instructor within 24 hours of the missed session whenever possible

3. Tardiness

  • Repeated or excessive tardiness may be treated as partial or full unexcused absences, at the discretion of the instructor
  • A pattern of late arrival will be considered a professionalism concern and will be reported to the Student Affairs Manager in alignment with the professionalism lapses and violations policy
  • Students arriving late must check in with the instructor after the session to ensure they receive any necessary information or makeup work

4. Wellness Check

  • If a student has more than two anticipated absences or any absence related to a personal or family emergency, their SJV PRIME+ Staff Advisor will reach out to check in on the student’s well-being

5. Makeup Work

  • Students are expected to complete the assigned makeup work for any missed session
  • All makeup work will include clear instructions and a deadline for submission
