Introduction to Medical Learning (IML) Undergraduate Education Courses
The Introduction to Medical Learning (IML) Education Courses is a 4-year course series designed to support SJV PRIME+ students’ understanding of the health care environment, physician impact, and health inequities in the region – all preparing undergraduate students to be successful in medical school. Courses will cover three core themes: (1) Pre-Health Education (2) Mentorship and (3) Preparation for Student Success.

Introduction to Medical Learning (IML) Year 1 (USTU-90)
This is a 1-unit course designed to introduce students to health care and provide the necessary skills to succeed as future health professionals. The course covers various aspects of healthcare delivery and explores the roles of physicians and other healthcare professionals in patient care. Students will also learn about the composition of healthcare teams and their collaborative efforts. The course aims to guide students in identifying pathways to pursue a career in healthcare.

Introduction to Medical Learning (IML) Year 2 (USTU-90)
Intro to Medical Learning 2 (IML2) will begin introducing students to the community engagement component of the SJV PRIME+ program. Throughout the academic year, this course will provide opportunities to understand the importance of community engagement within the health care system.
This will be accomplished through a combination of:
- Classroom Seminars
- Service Learning / Community Engagement
- Experiential Learning
- Community Engaged Research

UCSF Fresno Faculty Mentoring Sessions
The mentoring program is designed to provide support, guidance, and exposure to health care systems, health care teams and the experiences of medical professions in health care. Structured meetings and clear expectations ensure regular interaction between mentors and mentees, focusing on areas such as academic guidance to medical school, and exposure to healthcare professions.
Students enrolled in the mentor program are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Check email regularly for mentor program updates
- Respond to requests or questions from program/mentor within 24 hours
- Mentor groups and meetings are confidential and supportive spaces
- Show up to all mentor meetings on time, with camera and microphone on
- Be present and engaged in the conversation, ask questions
- Check in with mentor about challenges (academic or personal), as needed
UC Merced F1 Faculty Academic Mentoring

Clinical Shadowing/Volunteering
Intro to Medical Learning 2 (IML2) will introduce students to the community engagement and experiential learning components of the SJV PRIME+ program. Throughout the academic year, this course will provide opportunities to understand the importance of community engagement within the healthcare system as well as provide the opportunity to learn about clinical practice through direct shadowing of physicians.
This will be accomplished through a combination of:
- Classroom Seminars: SJV PRIME+ students will attend classroom seminars to learn about community engagement as it relates to health care and participate in peer discussion to share about their community engagement experiences.
- Service Learning / Community Engagement: SJV PRIME+ students will be expected to engage in service-learning opportunities through engagement with community partners to gain further understanding of the social determinants of health and other factors impacting the health of a community.
- Experiential Learning: SJV PRIME+ students will engage in experiential learning opportunities through observation of health care providers in their day-to-day activities.
- Community Engaged Research: SJV PRIME+ students will have the opportunity to conduct and participate in research focused on engaging the community.
Students are required to participate in experiential learning and community engagement. The SJV PRIME+ community engagement team will work with students to coordinate site placements for both community engagement and experiential learning opportunities.
