The goal of the SJV PRIME+ Mentoring Program is for students to build a professional relationship with a UCSF Fresno faculty physician, who will model early doctoring and self-reflection skills. In addition to professional mentorship, mentors emphasize the importance of peer support, encouraging students to share personal and academic experiences, challenges, and successes. This collaborative environment fosters a strong sense of community and resilience, ensuring that every student feels supported on their journey to becoming compassionate and capable healthcare providers. The mentoring program also provides optional activities for mentoring groups to use to develop important pre-medical competencies.
Students will be paired with a UCSF Fresno physician in small mentoring groups with other SJV PRIME+ students to meet approximately once a month during the academic semester. Mentoring sessions will primarily take place virtually over Zoom, with some opportunities for in-person meetings. Each semester, the program will hold a Mentoring Retreat at either UC Merced or UCSF Fresno.
Students enrolled in the mentor program are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Check email regularly for mentor program updates
- Respond to requests or questions from the program/mentor within 24 hours
- Maintain confidentiality and foster a supportive environment in mentor groups and meetings
- Show up to all mentor meetings on time, with camera and microphone on
- Be present and engaged in the conversation, ask questions
- Check in with mentor about challenges (academic or personal), as needed
